Jane's story of how she became debt free

The pain etched on Jane’s face was more than I could bear. She hung her head like the End of the World was about an hour away. I was scared to ask her what was wrong… and then she started to cry.

“The bank just took away my credit card”, she finally got out in only a whisper, between sobs. “I haven’t been able to pay the monthly bill for a while and I called them and even told them too. And then they just up and cancel it…”

About a week back Jane’s job had been eliminated where she works and she had yet to find other employment.

I had been hurt in a car accident about two months before and the doctor said it would be about 2 months before I could work again. I just couldn’t help her out. We were in trouble.

Jane and I had relied on her employment while I was recovering… but I had not asked her what she was doing with her money.

Women in Debt - Continued Spending

It turned out that Jane had been spending as though there were still 2 incomes in the household, but there wasn’t. With some inquiring about her credit card I finally found out that her parents had taught her nothing about money and especially nothing about debt.

One Woman’s struggle with Debt…

Jane was very embarrassed to share her story about growing up. There had been no money discussions, no sharing of information and definitely no teaching of the children basic money skills.

It was our dream to someday own a home of our own and live debt free. This was a real blow to that dream.

Our situation quickly went from bad to worse as our creditors suddenly, mysteriously learned of Jane’s cancelled credit card.

It turns out that credit reports are shared with all creditors and any information, especially bad credit information is quickly shared. Suddenly everyone who we owed money to wanted to be paid in full? And right at a time when we could least afford it.

The first step… Communication

We needed to talk and that is what we did. Jane and I made some hard choices and decided some personal sacrifices would be in order. But first we sought some advice on what to do.

Debt Consolidation looked promising, but it would simply extend our debt repayment for years into the future. Our dream of living a debt free lifestyle would be ruined. We even looked at bankruptcy. We had nothing it seemed, so what did we have to lose. It turned out we did have a lot to lose. It would cost us at least $1200 and our credit rating for over 7 years. That was way too high of a price to pay...

We were on the right track by taking action. Jane didn’t want the problem to fester and grow worse, so we kept looking. It was painful not having much money, but we knew we would find answer to our problem.

Ready to throw in the towel…

Jane was nearly ready to give up on several occasions. She thought about leaving and she thought about just going back home. But Jane did not give up, much to her credit.

We worked together, prayed together and finally a solution that worked came our way. The situation had gotten critical. No Jobs yet, creditor phone calls and letters sending the stress level beyond belief. But we held on… mostly to each other.

Debt Relief for Women - Jane’s Answer…

One weekend we just were fed up, so we decided to pay our friends Ron and Nancy a visit. Nancy always made Jane feel better, she was so inspirational.

It wasn’t long after we closed the door, that Jane started to unburden herself to her friend, Nancy. After listening Jane’s story for a while Nancy began to smile. She looked over at Ron and he just nodded…. They had been exactly where we are, and they knew what to do.

Jane Smiled for the first time in Months.

Nancy went into her private office and wrote down a website address for Jane to take home and look at. She said that it would solve all of our problems, as it was obvious that Jane and I knew absolutely nothing about debt.

We could not wait; as soon as we got home we had to have a look. We fired up the computer and plugged the website address into the search box and up it came.

And Jane finally smiled, for the first time in months. She started to cry right after she was so happy to find and answer to her problems. Jane finally realized that it wasn’t her fault that she had not learned what she needed to know about money and debt in today’s World.

It took us exactly 3 years and 4 months to pay off $43,000 in debt. The plan worked for us just as it had worked for Ron and Nancy.

Thanks Nancy

We came so close to not following their advice, we are so thankful we did.
